Cancer Research Awards

Overview of Program

cancer in georgiaThrough the Georgia State Income Tax Check-Off Program, approximately $2 million has been contributed to the Georgia Cancer Research Fund for Cancer Research Awards. Georgians have been generously donating to the fund on their state tax returns since the start of the program in 2000.

To date, the Coalition has awarded 55 grants thanks to voluntary check-off donations exceeding $2 million.

The Coalition administers the fund, granting awards to scientists in Georgia who are researching the prevention, treatments, and cure of cancer. In the competitive application process, proposals are reviewed and graded by a national panel of oncology experts. Grants are only awarded to the leading edge research rated as “outstanding” by the Review Committee. The awards are aligned with the National Cancer Institute's top research priorities.

The original Cancer Research Award legislation restricted the funds raised to breast, prostate and ovarian cancer research. In 2009, the Georgia State Legislature amended the legislation, so that starting in 2010, Cancer Research Awards will better reflect Georgia’s comprehensive approach to cancer research.
