As Governor of Georgia, I continue my dedication to addressing the state’s important health care issues. I wholeheartedly support the objectives of the Georgia Cancer Coalition to reduce the number of Georgians suffering from and succumbing to cancer.
Amazing things have been accomplished in the last decade in Georgia and around the country. For an increasing number of Georgians, cancer is no longer a death sentence. Rather, it is becoming a preventable, controllable, beatable disease. For the first time, we are seeing a decline in the numbers of lives claimed by cancer. People are living longer both with the disease and after the disease. Screening is better and more widespread. Treatments are safer and outcomes continue to improve.
I can also say with confidence that, thanks to the Georgia Cancer Coalition and its partners throughout the state, the future of cancer research in our state looks bright. Nearly everyone has been touched by the effects of this awful disease, and it is vitally important that we find ways to decrease cancer’s human and economic cost.
I applaud the Coalition’s continued commitment to developing unique partnerships between public and private organizations to create a continuum of comprehensive care that maximizes our resources.
